I. 1. To the first Cross Int.g. he says-
Ans- I am not.
II. 2. To the second Intg he says-
Ans.- I am not related to the complainant, in any
way, within my knowledge.
III. 3. To the third Intg he says.
Ans- My business is farming, and it was
the same in 1843.
IV. 4. To the fourth Int.g. he says
Ans.- There is no such special custom con-
fined to Pickens County that I know of.
V. 5. To the fifth Cross Int.g he says
Ans.- I know nothing of the making of said
notes, nor of the matters required of in this Inter-
rogatory.

Ans- I know nothing in answer to this Interrog-
atory.

Ans- I examined said slaves at the request of the
complainant. Iknow three or four of said negroes
by name, and I know several others of the same lot
by sight. The names of such as I did not know before,
I learned from complainant, his wife, and his son James
