Head Quarters Co. C, 5th Reg. Ala. Davis' Ford on Occoquan, Va. Dec. 25th A.D. 1861.
Hon. M. L. Stansel;
Dear Sir;
Feeling that all I am, have or ever hope to be depends upon the success of the Southern Confederacy, and being anxious to fit myself for more efficient service in the present contest, I hope you'll make application to the Gov. of Ala. to endeavor to get me the privilege & authority of attending the Military Department at Tuscaloosa for the ensuing three months - I paying my own expenses and being subject at all times to the order of my Capt. whenever my services may be needed in the Reg.
I'd not make such request if there were any prospects for a Battle here, but all hopes of a Battle here have vanished. I have nothing to do here, but go out on Dress Parade; have learned the Infantry tactics practically & theoretically, and am now anxious to learn Artillery & Cavalry tactics.
I say three months, because I think I can learn all that is necessary in that time, and besides, after the 1st of April the Campaign may open for active operations.
I can get - I now have the recommendations of everyCapt. in the Reg., and if necessary I'll forward them to you.
Respectfully,
Thad. C. Belsher.
P.S. Let me hear from you soon
