As your State is about establishing an Armory for the manufacture of Arms, I apply for the position of Master Armorer. I have been engaged in the manufacture & altering of arms for the last twelve years with Mr Saml. Sutherland of this city, a fac-simile of whose recommendation I append below; I can also give the best references in regard to my character, ability &c.

Hoping it may be your pleasure to confer the appointment on me I am Sir

knowledge of his trade as an Armorer in my establishment and under my immediate Supervision, and that he is now and has been in my employment as Master Armorer for the Manufacture, Altering & Repairing of fire arms, for the past twelve years and I have the best opportunity of forming a correct opinion of his merits as a workman & a Gentleman. I therefore take great pleasure in saying that I consider him fully qualified by education, experience, sober and industrious habits, to fill the situation he seeks and I cordially recommend his claims, not only as a native Southern Mechanic and honorable young Gentleman, but as the most competent workman in the State, to the favorable consideration of the Executive, and hope it may be your pleasure to confer the appointment on him.
