Sir,
I have been recently released from prison. A short time after my release by request I was permitted by Genl Tilghman to report in person to the Governor of Alabama.
I went immediately to Montgomery and, not finding you at home, I came here to see my relations whom had not seen for eighteen months. At the time of my capture I was acting

Adjutant of the 1st Alabama Regiment. My time of service expired in March last, while our forces were in such a precarious situation I remained with the Regiment and was taken at Island 10 when our forces were surrendered - on the 8th of April last.
I have never been discharged from the service, and if you can assign me to any duty I will be obliged. If references are necessary, or letters of recommendation, I will cite you to Judge Jo. Walker of Montgomery, and can get letters of recommendation from Col. Steedman, of the 1st Alabama,
and others of the Army. I can refer you also to Genl J. T. Bradford of Talladega.
I will send herewith a letter from Lt Gaillard of the 1st Regt.
With feelings of the highest regard
I remain, sir, your ob'd't. s'v't.
Jos. T. McGehee.
