Rio

OverviewVersions

Description

Sired by a Brazilian-born poodle (described in AHS to LS 1851.01.11), Rio became a regular feature of AHS routine in Taliaferro, and the object of his melancholy when away in DC. AHS pattern of affect and dominance a key feature of later biographical writing about Stephens; Rio's image was captured in 1851 oil painting, in photographic imagery of the 1850s, and in a woodcut illustration of Cleveland: AHS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE. A spate of letters discuss the dog's declining health and, in 1863, his death.
