Rhoda Moss

OverviewVersions

Description

Listed as "29 year old Black person" in U.S. 1850 census, living Atlanta, with three children (Yorke, Georgia, and Elizabeth) and an Irish-born RailRoad worker, age 60. This is likely a boarder rather than a father of children (listed as "Black" rather than "mulatto").

Status as free person of color established on basis of Warren County lineage of her mother. An unusually large population of free persons of color worked for wages in Warren and surrounding counties and the Moss family was one of the largest. Yorke and Georgia were registered as FPC in Taliferro County in 1862 and 1863 (see Lunceford).
