Dear Brother

I drop you a line barely
to say that we got a shower of rain
here this evening. I should hope for
more to night if it had not turned
so cool. The thermometer is now at 80°
The rain came about 3 oclock. It
came from towards Sparta. I hope
John and his family had got there
before the rain if indeed it came
from so far. Yesterday there was
a very heavy rain about double
[mills.?] There was also a shower at
my place below town. Whether there
was any there today or not I do not
know. I am tolerable to day
in my feelings. My arm mends but
slowly. Let me hear from you any
day. All your letters have been read.
Toombs staid with me friday night.
I let him drive my horses & buggie home
Saturday. Garland brought them back yesterday.
Pierce is up to day. Cousin Sabra is sick
with bowel affliction besides other disorders.
My love to Sister Emm & To John & his family.
Yours sincerely Alex

Could the illegible word be "mills"? i.e. shortened version of millimetres? Just a thought.

Robert Bonner

Maybe so! In the 1870s, AHS chaired House committee on weights and measures and had a life-long interest in ways of measuring.
