On arrival at Waterloo W/O Darrell joined No. 200
Squadron, and with this unit carried out, as Wireless Operator
Air Gunner on Hunson aircraft, numerous operational flights.
These included coastal reconnaissance patrols, convoy escort
flights, and anti-submarine patrols. On the 10th February,
1944, W/O Darrell was a member of the crew of a Hudson aircraft
which took off from Waterloo on a ferry flight to Maison Blanche,
Algeria, arriving at its destination on 13th February. The
staging posts en route included Pt. Etienne, French West Africa,
Marrakesh, Morocco, and Ras el Ma, Algeria.

On the 22nd February, 1944, W/O Darrell was a passenger
on a Dakota aircraft which took off from Maison Blanche for the
United Kingdom via Rabat Sale, Morocco. The flight from Rabat
Sale to England was made on the 2nd March.

On the 19th March, 1944, W/O Darrell proceeded to No.
5 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit, Turnberry, Ayrshire, and
thence - on the 22nd May - to No. 4 Reconnaissance Flying Unit,
Haverfordwest, Pembrokshire. On the 1st June he was posted to
No. 131 Operational Training Unit, Killadeas, Fermanagh,
Northern Ireland.

On 21st September, 1944, W/O Darrell, whilst off duty,
was accidently drowned in Lough Erne, Fermanagh. He was
buried with Service Honours in the Irvinestown Parish Churchyard,
County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
