Alan Fraser was born at Lower Hutt on the 8th April, 1911 and received his secondary education at Pahiatua District High School, where he gained his Matriculation Certificate. He was a member of the school first XV for two years and later played rugby for Napier High School Old Boys. At the time of his application for aircrew training - on the 21st September, 1939 - he was a partner in the firm D. Fraser & Sons, Sawmillers, Kotemaori.

Sergeant Fraser was enlisted on the 27th July, 1940, at the Ground Training School, Levin. Late the following month he was posted to No. 1 Air Observer's School, Ohakea for training as an air observer. He was awarded his air observer's badge and promoted to Sergeant on the 10th December, 1940. On the 19th December, 1940 he embarked on the "Dominion Monarch" for the Middle East.

Shortly after his arrival in the Middle East he was posted - on the 4th February, 1941 - to No. 70 Operational Training Unit, Ismalia, and early the following month to No. 14 Squadron. Operating with No. 14 Squadron from Port Sudan, on the Red Sea, as a navigator of Blenheim aircraft, he took part in 7 operational flights, the targets including Italian troop positions around, Keren, Asmara and at Tecleasan, in Eritrea; a photographic reconnaissance of Massawa Harbour and a raid on Italian positions in Abyssinia.
