Joseph Fyvie was born at Glasgow, Scotland on the 12th July, 1916. At an early age he accompanied his parents to New Zealand when they came to this country to take up residence here. He received his secondary education at Mount Albert Grammar School where he passed the matriculation examination. He later attended night classes at Auckland Technical College where he studied commercial subjects and succeeded in passing the Accountancy Professional examination. His sports were association football, tennis and cricket. He was employed as a clerk in the office of R & W, Hellaby Ltd., of Aucklan and was so employed when on the 21st September, 1939 he applied for war service in the R.N.Z.A.F.

Sgt. Fyvie was enlisted for aircrew training at the Initial Training Wing, Levin on the 29th September, 1940 and was posted on the 26th October 1940 to No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School, New Plymouth for his elementary flying training. He was posted on the 20th December 1940 to No. 3 Flying Training School, Ohakea, where on the 10th February, 1941 he was awarded his flying badge. On the 22nd March 1941 he was promoted to Sergeant. On the 29th April 1941 he embarked for the United Kingdom.

The journey was made via Canada and Sgt. Fyvie arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 29th June, 1941. He was posted on the 23rd July, 1941 to Central Flying School, Hullavington, Wiltshire. On the 22nd August, 1941 he was posted to No. 9 Service Flying Training School also at Hullavington.

On the 19th September 1941 Sgt. Fyvie was killed in an aircraft accident while carrying out a training flight in a Miles Master training aircraft. He was buried in the London Road Cemetery, Chippenham, Wiltshire.
