Later, two survivors were picked up, and from them it was learned that the "Ingaren" had been torpedoed in the North Atlantic at 4 a.m. on the morning of the 12th January, 1942.

As there were no other survivors Pilot Officer Hewett was officially presumed to have lost his life at sea on the 12th January, 1942.
