Reginald Marshall was born at Palmerston North on the 12th August, 1918. He received his secondary education at the Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland, afterwards completing a course at the Seddon Memorial Technical College in motor engineering. He played football, cricket, tennis and golf; captained both his school football and cricket teams and played representative cricket for Auckland. From the time of leaving school in 1934 until applying for enlistment in aircrew on the 12th June 1940, he was employed by Morris, Black and Matheson Limited, of Auckland.

Flying Officer Marshall was enlisted at Blenheim on the 4th June 1941 and employed there on ground duties until remustered to aircrew and posted to the Initial Training Wing, Levin, on the 18th October. He proceeded to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, Harewood, on the 29th November, to commence his flying training and to No. 2 Service Flying Training School, Woodbourne, Blenheim on the 10th January 1942. Here on the 24th April 1942 he was awarded the flying badge and commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer. While overseas he was promoted to Flying Officer on the 24th October 1942. Meanwhile, on the 27th May 1942, he had embarked for the United Kingdom.

Flying Officer Marshall did not arrive at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth until the 1st September, as the ship in which he was travelling was torpedoed, in the Atlantic, and he was landed in New York. Shortly after arrival in England he proceeded on the 22nd September to No. 17 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, Watton, Norfolk, and flew Miles Master aircraft before posting on the 13th October to No. 57 Operational Training Unit, first at Hawarden, Cheshire, and later at Eshott, Northumberland. With this unit he completed his training on Spitfire fighter aircraft; on the 6th February 1943 he embarked at Liverpool arriving at Oran on the 16th of the month, and Gibraltar on the 19th. From there he flew to Setif, Algeria, by way of Algiers,
