In December he was posted for operational duty with No. 75 (N.Z.) Squadron, Feltwell, Norfolk. As a member of a crew flying Wellington aircraft, he carried out bombing raids on the docks in the enemy occupied towns of Rotterdam, in Holland; Brest and Boulogne, in France; and on the German towns of Frankfurt and Wilhelmshaven. He also took part in raids on other targets in Germany.

On the 21st February, 1941, P/O Muir was a member of the crew of a Wellington aircraft which took off on air operations over the German town of Wilhelmshaven and failed to return to its base. He was later presumed to have lost his life.

A post war casualty search revealed that two members of the crew had washed ashore, but no subsequent information was received of Pilot Officer Muir, and it has consequently been assumed that he had lost his life at sea without trace.

Two other New Zealanders were included in the crew of the aircraft, P/O A.J. Falconer of Wanganui, and Sgt. A.M. Brodie of Gisborne.
