405626 Aircraftman Donald Alexander PATERSON

Donald Paterson was born at Auckland on 22nd April, 1908. He received his secondary education at the Mt. Albert Grammar School, passing the University Entrance examination. He afterwards studied for and passed in seven subjects of the Professional Accountants' examination. He was employed in a clerical capacity by the Lands and Survey Department at Auckland and took a keen interest in motor-cycle racing. In May, 1940 he applied for enlistment in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a wireless operator.

Aircraftman Paterson was enlisted on 27th December, 1940 at Harewood and posted to the Technical Training School at Wigram on 31st January 1941 for his wireless operator training.

Aircraftman Paterson was the Wireless Operator of an Oxford aircraft engaged during the 16th March, 1942 in a training flight off the Coast between Timaru and Christchurch, and which failed to return to its base. All the crew, including Aircraftman Paterson, were classified as missing. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 26th March, 1942.
