Description

Charles Lewis Cocke (1820-1901) was an educator. He Became principal of Valley Union Seminary at Botetourt Springs, site of the former, unsuccessful Roanoke Female Seminary. Cocke turned the school into the Female Seminary at Botetourt Springs, which was renamed Hollins Institute in 1855 in honor of donors John and Ann Halsey Hollins of Lynchburg.
