1865 May 6th. Mrs. Benedict here teaching school, Planting corn on creek

7th Sunday, pretty day warm

8th Planting corn on Creek & finished at 12 oclock. Planted Pumpkins seed snaps & simblings & fixed up all the Dikes on Creek again Jordan Lowry & Abram helped us plant Corn on Creek Saturday & this day. Jordan & Buck came back helped us finished, Planted Peas on Lot. Rained this evening & we set out some Greens in Garden cleaning up new ground fixing Garden for Greens putting up some crows in Corn field Thank God we have not been molested yet by marauders except the stealing Lewis & Hester, Lately Mr. Lincoln President of the United States has been killed Seward has been killed & since Andrew Johnson has been killed also by JW Boothe one of the actors in the theatre at Washington

City & Genl U Grant is now military Dictator, J Davis President of the S. Confederacy is gone Cross the Mississippi & Carried the Gov. with him there. Here Warm Weather

9th Wm Foster & Chas Williams from Johnsons Army that surrendered got their Breakfast & owes me 75 Cents for their Breakfasts at Work in new ground negroes planting their corn Smith & Jerry Carried Cotton to Millers machine 1 Bag 41 lbs 1 Do

10th Finished planting Cotton Broom corn & Planted some I[rish] Potato Began to replant Corn to day

11 Jerry Smith, one of my Boys, gone off to Yankees last night Coltering new ground replanting Corn, I went to Plantation today

12th Replanting corn first planting

15th. Planting Corn & Peas in ground & working out Irish Potatoes in oat fields - - -

16. 17. 18. 19. 20th This week Lowry left my plantation & said his wife induced him to go. gone 1 day came back his wife followed him the overseer drove her off. She did not go I went there Thursday made her take her clothes & started her home had up Wm Neal John Neal & Jennings for stealing my oats, & on acct J J Lains Testimony They were Set at Liberty & I had $[2.60?] cost to pay loosing 3 days & my Oats too when We track the oats nearly in Sight of Neals House We have been weeding corn This week Planted Some I[rish] Potatoes & Pea Patch Set Our Gardens in Greens Beets etc etc etc Rained yesterday evening

1 Fine Rain this evening --

2nd Rained last night Bushing wheat & Oats this morning Sent Henry to Lains shop to shoe Robin & Agreed Dutch Plow Hoe to paint & & bring Turn meal from Yates Mill

24th & 25th May Sheared sheep Weeding corn & Plowing Weeding & Plowing Cotton Sourghum, etc.

26 Swingling flax & spining as its Raining -- this morning Rained most all night sent Henry & clarborne to get cow out of mire for Mrs Haney[?]

29th Thined corn at house Saturday Plowing & weeding corn on Hills by Oats Stack - Plowing corn negros

30 & 31 Plowing & Weeding Corn on creek - Warm weather Jerry going to Plantation 1st this week say last May of 1865

1st June 1865 S W Johns came here & claimed Lucy left here by one of Jackson's men in place of Phil & said he [unclear] stole her from him. Warm weather

2 working corn on creek

3 Plowing & weeding corn on creek Jerry went to Plantation 1st of this week to live & Richard Whitehead here

4th Sunday all went to meeting at Greenfield but me Yesterday Sally B[?] got so Lazy & trifling I concluded to whip her & she run off before

5th June 1865 [unclear] Jerry gone to Fannies Richard & Sallie to Mr Glenns & this evening all came home & after we had returned for the night I heard somebody walk around my House & got up & saw more than one man pass the window towards big room I ask who it was said all right. They said they wanted to See me. I asked them who they were They said first they were strangers Guards from CH. to see me I put on my clothes lighted the Candle & opened The Door & 5 Men Came in all armed they asked me If my name was not Capt Graves I told them it was they asked me If I did not have a son in law. I told them I did & Called him up & as soon as they all got up they took my shot Gun sitting by secretary & hand it to one of their party & said myself Jerry & J R Whitehead might consider ourselves under arrest till they searched my house. I had taken the Oath off Allegiance to the U States
