Dear Mother:

If you have not already noticed the return address which no doubt slipped by you, the enclosed paper will probably explain almost everything in it self. The first and most important thing is that I have been made Sgt. This of course carries an increase in pay. All in all the increase comes to about fourteen dollars a month.

My duties are about the same, just a few changes. Instead of being in charge of one section I now have too. To explain what a section is would involve too much time and it would mean little to you. My big problem right now in doing my job to the best of my ability. We have so many young boys now who are and will look to myself and the other Sgt for guidence and leadership when things get tough

and it may mean their lives. I only hope that I'll be able to do my job well enought to bring them over the rough spots till they catch on and can take care of themselves. This worries me a great deal for if I slip and we lose some of them it will be my fault. I'll will need God's help more than ever in the days to come to complete this task properly.

Also the more and the quicker I teacht hem all there is to know the quicker the day will come when I can get off and get a rest. This letter may not sound it but I am very happy about making this rate. But the responsibility I have toward these boys (and they are just boys) sort of restrains my joy. Until they are taught everything and helped through the first "hot one" I don't feel I can relax very much.

We were only informed about the rates yesterday so don't feel I have known it for five or six days and did not

bother to write. I am letting you know as soon as possible.

Received the picture of John and the baby today. John looks good, don't know much about babies yet. I owe him a letter, have to get it off soon. The last pen you sent is not too good. I am not writing with it now. If you can find another please send it along.

That seems to be all for this evening. I'll write again soon. Give my best to all, especially my "old Pal" and best grandfather, "Pop." Still taking things easy so there is no need to worry. Write often.

Your loving son Georgie
