them driving them across the Shanendouh [Shanendoah]
river killing several across the river with
our carbines and receiving no injury
save the loss of one or twoo [two] horses shot by
the rebels We also took sevral [several] prisoners
one lieutenant amongst the number
After persuing [pursuing] them across the river and
entirely through the gap our forces wer [were]
withdrawn and started on the return
for W- [Washington] On the way we passed through
Leesburgh Leesburg, Virginia charged on the town at a gallop
from all sides Here we took some
prisoners of importance also a lot of
horses One prisoner was a colonel of
enjeneers [engineers] and held a place on jen [Gen.] Ewells|Richard S. Ewell
staff he had a fine horse and equipments
which he valued at five hundred dollars We also took
one Major found him dressed in womans [woman's]
clothes and hid under a bed in in a house
in town sevral [several] other officers and men
of lesser importance On our way from
