General Contract.[centered]

Articles of Agreement made and concluded this
Twenty third day of December in the year one thousand
eight hundred and sixty three, Between Charles Crocker
of the City and County of Sacramento "to"[crossed out] and State
of California, — of the first part, and The Central
Pacific Railroad Company of California of the second part.

Whereby it is covenanted and agreed as
follows, to wit; The aforesaid party of the first part,
in consideration of the sum of one dollar, the receipt
of which is hereby acknowledged, and of the prices
hereafter agreed to be paid by the party of the second
part, hereby covenant and agree to furnish all the
materials, and to construct and in every respect com=
plete the Grubbing and Clearing, Grading, Masonry
Bridging, Trestling, Timber and Iron in Structures
upon sections Nos. Nineteen and Twenty (19 & 20) of
"Central Pacific Railroad"[scribbled out] [caret]C. P. R. R. at the rates and prices
annexed hereto, in such a manner as will conform
in every respect to the annexed specifications, and
to the following conditions, viz.:

1. The work shall be commenced as
soon as practicable after the execution of these
presents, or as soon as the Chief Engineer
of said Company, or his "authorized"[crossed out]
