A. This account on page 24 shows the
general account of the Contract and Finance
Company, in which there seems to be only
one cash payment made to them. That
is August 12, 1868, $70,687.50

Q. 556 Please explain these two items on
page 24, under date of December 26, 1867:
on item of $23,758.46 and another item of
$10,527.42, called "Stanford's Report of
September 5," and "Stanford's Report of
December 26th," respectively. Will you
please turn to the journal entries, as shown
there, and explain what those items consist of?

A. [After examination:] They are for cash
paid out by Leland Stanford for account
of Contract and Finance Company.

Q. 557 Please produce the journal showing
those entries.

A. [Produces, and exhibits entry to Mr.
Cohen
.] The entry is on page 453 of the
journal, and is as follows: Under date
of December 26, — "Contract and Finance
Company, To Leland Stanford: For dis=
=bursements on account of the company,
as per report of September 5, 1867, $23,758.46."
