Sacramento, California. Oct. 18th. 1856.

Dear sister. I write these few lines to inform you
that I am ej enjoying good health ad
and hope this letter will find you so. I got
your letter of June 11th in due time. I should have
written before but I waihed [waited] to see what
melvin [Melvin] would do. the last letter i got
from him he writes something after this style.
cufs the mines. it is not all gold shines I thought
I had a show. but how it is i dont [don't] know
last week i took out from 10 to 25 cts [cents] to the
pan. but now ill [I'll] be darned if i can.
whether he meant to write in prose as
well I have not yet ascertained. he says
he cannot afford to get his likeness taken
1 yet but perhaps he will between this and
Spring it is not his fault that he is not
able. for i learn he is industrius [industrious] and (varying?)
as any one in the state. he declares he never
will leave the state untill [until] he does make
something. i have not had ay any better
luck. it is very easy to calculate it
how much a years work will amount to at
40 or 50 dollars per month but it is hard
to get a steady place for more than 2 or 3
months at a time. and before he can get
another, the money he had earnt [earned] is all
Spent.
