Master Edward Bates
Dearest Edward.
We have enjoyed your letters and are delighted to know that you are enjoying the place so much. I hope you will continue to do so, dearie, and will keep well. Your Father forwarded your letter to him which I enjoyed very much. The snow much [must] be good fun to play in. This town is very much changed. So much so that it is no longer famliar, but I enjoy meeting a lot of old friends. It rained a lot after we came up but is quite hot now. hotter than I like very much – Jocelyn is well & is having a rather nice time. Swimming etc. It is not so interesting as your place I think but it will be when we get to Yellowstone park I think.

Some of the relatives & friends were invited to a party here last night & we were up late so I feel very sleepy today & a little stupid. It is too hot now to be very pleasant walking or doing anything in particular.
We were at a wedding this a.m. It was a pretty one. Your Grandmother & Aunt Eleanor are pretty well not so very – we are meeting a great many new people.
It was very kind of Mrs. Waterman to lend you the soap.
I must write to her.
Grandmother Aunt E. Jocelyn & I all send you much love.
Take care of yourself & be a quiet & helpful boy. I am glad that Sam Babcock is there he is a nice boy remember me to him.
A great deal of love dear from
Your loving Mother

My dear Edward
Your very pleasant letter of 13th came to Alameda, then it was sent to Sonoma and Mrs Waterman and Miss Edith could not wait for me to open it, but did it themselves. I gave them a good talking to for doing so. I suppose you and your Father have had a good time together. We have another calf at the ranch, and Hopkins in [is] going to raise it – Have you met Willie Baunan yet? I think that you will like him. Remember me to him – Yours very truly

Dear Edward:
I received your kind letter the other day and have just made time to answer it. I am very glad to see that you are having such a good time, but be careful of yourself.
Yesterday I went to the + & it was full of bees & I only got stung four times. Ow!
There is not much news, but there was a swell fight today, & a man got the biggest & worst black-eye, I ever saw. I bet his jaw was broken, his whole left side of the face was black & yellow. He went & got a revolver to kill the fellow, but we took it away from him & he was mad as the dickens. He was drunk.
I went fishing today & caught one 2-lb black-bass. They didn't bite very well, so I went swimming & had a swell time.
I saw "bull" Lion & Tom Pickersgill & Capt. Mansfield, in Capt's scow. They anchored here overnight so I went on board & had a swell time til 11 P.M. They are going to Sacramento & are on a cruise; they were out three weeks, already, & were going to be out three weeks more.
Helen invited me to go down to their place at Carmel, & stay during July, & I think I will. Nifty, eh?
There is no more to say, so hoping that you are well, happy, & enjoying yourself, I am
your loving brother

My dear old Edward:
I got your letter of the 18th yesterday, and I will try to send you the various things you ask for. I also got your letter of the 21st today, and I see by my letter which I sent you to come to Tahoe that I said Saturday morning [underlined]. I am very sorry because I would like to have seen more of you my dear boy. I hope you will have a lovely time on your trip to the Upper Truckee. Today if [crossed out] is awfully hot here it is one of the hottest days ever known.
Mr. Going and his family left last night for Portland, so I am now alone, but as I have lots of work to do in the office, I shall enjoy going to bed early –
Write me when you can at the office.
your loving Father
