This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. Yesterday I went to the Alpha Chi Omega House for lunch. The girls were very nice and I also had a nice time. They have an adorable house.

Last night one fo the girls from the Delta Zeta House called me up and asked me to dinner to-morrow night. But I can't go as Artha is having a few girls over in the evening & I accepted her invitation before the other girl asked me.

Well, sweetness, I must get my small brain to working. Be a good kid, and I hope I hear from you to-morrow.

Love & everything, Mar.

Thursday, Feb. 3, 1921.

Dearest Sned,

Have just finished reading your little and it was so wonderful, dear. When I get letters like that they make me so happy and make me want to be with you. Day after to-morrow I will see you, I can hardly wait.

To-night I am going over to Artha's but I want to come home early as I have studying to do. I have to make an outline for English. To-day we had a History section. Of course the teacher had to call on me

when I didn't know the answer to the question. I felt so badly as now I will get a 4 for to-day. It worries me so much. I can't afford to get many of those.

Another girl and I started to walk up to the "Big C" this afternoon. We left after lunch and as had a one o'clock we couldn't go clean to the top. I was crazy to go all the way as I have never been up before. Day before yesterday Evelyn and I went up in the Campanille. It was the first time I had ever been up there. It was a very clear day and we could see all over. At first I was kind of

dizzy but felt better after I had been up there awhile.

We had that Hoover Drive up here our [inserted above the line] quota was $5000. We were only supposed to give $1.00 a piece. I think $10.00 each is terrible. Poor old Sned will be broke after that, won't you dear. To-day was just like spring. It was so warm on the campus, I just hate to go inside the buildings on nice days. As soon as spring starts Evelyn, Virginia and I are going to take our lunch over and eat on the lawn.

I am so sorry you have a cold, dear, and I do hope that you are over it by now. Martha is in bed to-day she

doesn't feel at all well. Bobby has been acting very naughty. Joc went down to your house for dinner to-night.

Dearie, come down to see me as soon as you can when you get home Saturday. I am so anxious to see you, you dear kid I just love you to pieces. Joc said that George and Ruth asked him when you and I were going to step off. Joc said it looked very much as if we were soon. They thought it was so nice that we went together. Ruth showed Martha the cup you gave her, also the wedding present. Martha said that Ruth likes them so much.

I am giving you a big kiss good-night X Did you get it, dear?

Marion.
