My own dear Edward

No news from you since your cable which came
last Tuesday. Received Croix de Guerre with
Palms. date San Alvadou".

As we could not quite make out what the
last three words meant we asked to have it
repeated which could only be done for [N?chulk]
they said — the repeated message said
"dated San Alvadou". which may mean
that your message was sent form San Alvadou or
[?] it was meant for "Bates" San Alvadou".
We were told San Alvadou is a place where
there is a large Military hospital or Sanatorium
for French and [underlined] American Soldiers. We are
hearing the talk is that you were there —
I hope this is right because we would hate
to have gotten any of the message wrongly.
The Croix de Guerre part of it is correct
