6:45p.m. -- noted following birds this evening
as I tended my trap-line; one hour, 5-6 when
quite dusky; this by memory, but there were so few,
I can hardly miss any. Mourning Dove (4 together, and
2, in flight); Red-shafted Flicker (2, one of them alighting
on the tops of granite boulders, flying from one to
another, and giving the usual winter call);
Nuttall Woodpecker (2, in willows); Russet-backed
Thrush ( one heard in willows - liquid whit),
Black Phoebe (1); Brown towhee (1); Rufous-crowned Sparrow
(quaint notes heard up a sparsely brushed ravine);
Road-runner (tracks again in trail); Wren-tit (notes heard).
Tonight at the ranch dinner-table I heard the
following, corroborated by several of the men:
Mountain Lions occur all thru this country. One
was roped by Salve (?) Melling in San Telmo Valley
recently (about 5 years ago), after being brought to bay by a dog. In the
low country the lions feed regularly on burro
colts, there being large numbers of wild burros.
In the San Pedro Martir, the lions feed not only on
deer but on horse-colts and calves; 8 head

Peromyscus (eremicus)fraterculus: eremicus added later as in earlier mouse records. (about 5 years ago), added later using a different pen, the writing resembles JG's

Nathani

JG originally wrote 80 head but struck out the 80 and wrote 8. Lamb's notes say 80. Lamb does not mention the man who roped the lion.

The bottom half of the next page was written in a lighter ink which resembles the "(about 5 years ago)" mentioned in the first note. I think that JG added the addition.

The name "Melling" is clearly written on page 2554. The first name is not given. Lamb mentions being at the ranch before so the name may appear in an earlier notebook.

In looking through some of the later pages, I came across an entry in which he clearly wrote Salve Meling. Later entries also use one "l". See page 2575 ff.

It looks like Melling has one L crossed out. I think JG corrected it to Meling.
