Description

Currently an independent city, Saint Louis was founded on February 14, 1764 in what was then French Territory. On April 29, 1803, it became part of United States territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase, and became part of the St. Louis District on September 30, 1804. It served as the capital of Louisiana Territory from 1805 until 1812, and the capital of Missouri Territory from 1812 until 1821. On December 6, 1812, St. Louis District became St. Louis County.
