Helpful Symbols
- Here are symbols that have shown up in these documents that you can use to copy and paste into your transcriptions as needed:
- Please write a note at the bottom of this page if you come across more obscure symbols or abbreviations, and include guesses if you know what they might mean.
- Ry or ℞ = recipe. | ℥ = ounce. | ʒ = dram. | ℔ = pound. | ℈ = scruple. | gr = grain. | ß or ſs (looks like a cursive "fs") = half. | q.s. = "as much as will suffice" | āā = "of each" | ds = dash | ※ = reference mark.
Transcription Conventions
- Transcribe what you find exactly as it appears: include original grammar and spelling errors, as well as crossed-out or erased text (as best you can).
- Ignore page formatting such as indentations and text alignment.
- Maintain line breaks (when the next word is on the next line) by hitting
Enter
once. Two returns indicate a new paragraph, whether indicated by a blank line or by indentation in the original. - For text that is formatted as a table (ie rows and columns) use | to delineate columns. Table Encoding
- You can highlight text and use the buttons at the top of the editing screen to apply the following tags:

Additions to the text, for example footnotes, comments in the margins, added words, etc.date
Select the text from the transcription that indicates a date. Add the date in yyyy-mm-dd format to the when attribute. Make inferences based on context whenever possible. You can truncate the date to only include the year/month or just the year, if that is all that is known.del
Text that has been crossed out or erased.footnote
Encloses the body of a footnote, with the footnote symbol in the marker attribute.gap
Used when the text is missing due to damage.head
Used for documents that contain a distinct title, such as newspaper clippings.sub

Used in cases when you are not able to make out what the text says. Write your best guess then highlight it with the tag.u

- You can go to the next page of a multi-page document by clicking on the arrows next to the
Page
button in the top right of the screen, but make sure to save your work before doing so.
"Autolink" will suggest subjects certain words could be linked to or you can use double braces to link subjects. [[Jane Doe]]
will link the text "Jane Doe" to the subject Jane Doe, while [[Jane Doe|Jane]]
will link the text "Jane" to the subject Jane Doe. We recommend that linking be left to an editor after the initial transcription is made.
