General duties. A beautiful day, but cold. A
thin skin of ice all over the ocean. A great many
walrus heard off shore but too far to be seen
and too far to go after because of ice. Calm & clear
Later- Shortly before dark a hear herd of about 20
walrus were seen on an ice floe to the S.W. about
2 miles distant. The water at the time was cou-
vered with young ice mingled with large floating
cakes. We decided to wait until day light.

The walrus seen yesterday were not to be seen
but were heard at intervals all day. After
breakfast Maurer spotted an Ugrug on an ice
cake about a mile South of camp. All hands
launched the dory and Maurer and I went after
him. We had break thru about 50 yards of
young ice and the Ugnug xxx became frightened
He swam about for some time so but we were
unable to get a shot at him. Variable airs.

Clear and calm. Water couvered with young
ice. The main flow is only a few hundrads yds.
