Good hop this morning. 0540 brief for
L2P- Gun pods didn’t work (contier charging),
But strafed [int?] + 1 rocket - Lousy
viz in haze.

Spent afternoon looking over O-Club
orders and looking at the Books.
Started new PT program - Push ups
pull ups & running on the beach.
Heard that Barney Pappas may have
been killed in a mortar attack up by
the DMZ - A waste!

In the transcription above you have "nat [national] guard" where the [national] is not part of the original text. I'm wondering is the addition of the "[national] " desired and even encouraged?

How you should transcribe the text? Should you maintain the original free mixing of upper and lower case letters without altering them or should you translate all to upper case or all to lower case?

Typically, the instructions are to follow the original text exactly but on most of the projects that I have worked, an abbreviation can be expanded as I did with the [national]. Putting the text in single brackets usually indicates a transcribers addition. Another usual rule is to use [illegible] when you can't read the text or if you can make out some but not all of the letters, use single brackets and put a question mark where you have doubts. This text is going to be challenging for anyone like myself who doesn't know the abbreviations that he used.
