HUNTLEY, FLORENCE AUG 17,
Chicago, Aug 17. Address The Leeland Hotel. Chicago.
My dear Mrs. Sewall,
After my congratulations, [?] your deserved triumph, in London. I will come to my point briefly that I may not consume your valuable time.
I do not know whether what I am about to ask is in violation of any unwritten laws, or in [contradiction?] of any established customs. As I never did anything like this before and have discussed it with no authorities, you will pardon me if my request is a breach of anything that is regarded as propriety?
Do you feel as if you indirect knowledge of me would justify you in expressing confience in my personal integrity? I take for granted you know of me through our mutual friend Adelaide, as well as through the book.
For sixteen years I have had to earn my own living. I'm more than [that?] I have worked only to buy the leisure to complete my work as laid out by The Brotherhood of India. To do this I have had again and again to step down or aside, to take

up various kinds of work to surely earn money, tr? I am assisting the federation in preparing data for the great convention on [t?] [Co?] in Sept.
Immediately there after I have the oppotunity to quietly open a good line of business - as an acuary in Life Insurance. My plan is to represent Life Insurance - not any particular co. this avoids the strain of soliciting for a particular co. The connection with ? I will value policies and give suggestions - gradis - to any one who may come to me. I will seek my clients for most part by card or letter of introduction without any kind of publicity and only among the best people.
Now to open this, with a full [?] of security, I want a few references, names that are know, and persons whose confidence in my honest, would be [for?] me the proper introductions.
Do you feel that you know me well enough to permit me to refer to you in this general [?]? You are of course committed to nothing but are expresive of confidence in my personal integrity.
Of course there are many names early obtained, but I want those who are known and especially one woman who represents the best in womankind. Pardon the length of this letter, but I needed to fully explain. If you find it easy to grant this [turn?] I will be very grateful. You will have helped in my long foray toward a cherished [?]. Very Sincerely Florence Huntley
