My dear Mrs. Sewall:

It makes me feel shabby to make no other acknowledgement of your hospitality than this hurried note. I reached Indianapolis three hours late yesterday evening, half sick in addition, and I left this morning at two minutes after eight. You will readily now understand, therefore, why I would neither accept your invitation nor call on you after the [?]. I am glad that you and Mrs. Stuart did not venture out ; it was a very poor affair, and my consolation is that I couldn't help it. We are mortal. I wanted to meet you and to see Mrs. Stuart again, but the [fates?] are against me. I shall hope for
