MARGHERITA, QUEEN OF ITALY

Letter from Her Majesty Queen Margherita of Italy to His Excellency Monsignore Bonomelli Bishop of Cremona

Monsignore,

I know that you in heart and thought are near me in this terrible moment when the Lord desires to prove all Italy, and that at the same time your thoughts and your prayers are for Him, for our poor King who so much loved his people and who fell victim of his love pierced by three balls shot from Italian hand --- what horror!

The Lord in His mercy has willed to spare him that supreme bitterness, which for him would have been terrible and to full of pain of knowing that the paricidal hand was Italian and that the shots dichared against this sacred person were thos of a subject.

I have thought, I believe that 'God helped me' of writing a Prayer in memory of our poor King, that all can say for the repose of His soul:

I have written it as I thought it out from the heart and plain so that all can understand it. Now first of all, I beleive the permission and approval of a bishop is necesary to publish it and I have thought of you whom I venerate from the depths of my heart and I hope you will give it. I pray you to have copied and printed these devotions and to publish and recommend them in memory of my Lord and King, and make it also known that I wrote them. Perhaps by the love which without any merit of mine, the people bequest me, it will be willingly repeat them. They consist of a Rosary and Prayer.

I recommend the memory of our good King myself, the reigning [King?] my son and all our family for your prayer, Meonsignore, and God will hear you.

With the highest esteem and true and profond veneration

Your Excellencey's most revernt and devoted

Margherita of Savoia
