Dear Mrs. Sewall,

I am compelled to forego the anticipated pleasure of attending the "Woman's Congress" of the World's Fair, May 15-22, and have cancelled all the engagements I have made in connection with it.

My husband, who has never before in his long life been ill enough to require the services of a physician, has

been seriously ill all the spring with bronchial and loryngeal troubles, and his physician forbids him to go to Chicago until June, or setttled warm weather.

I should never forgive myself if anything went amiss with him in my absense. And as he cannot accompany me to Chicago in May, I shall remain at home, and wait till he is able to undertake the trip.

But you have made such heroic efforts to ensure the success of the Congress, that every woman of influence should cooperate with you in the most generous manner, and by personalattendance and hearty sympathy aid you to the utmost. As I cannot do this, I feel it due you that I report the compulsory cause of my failure.
