to question, or in any of the Upper
[ertions?] of the St John River. This ap-
peared so conclusive to me after
the first years Experience in operating
here that I have ever since recom-
mended other means to be adopted
for securing supplies of Salmon
Eggs for the St John river hatchery
which in my humble opinion [?]
entails far less Expenditure, and
would surely be assured a full
supply of Eggs for that institution
from year to year.

Mr. McCluskey reports only
17 salmon being caught this season
for spawning purposes: 12 females &
5 males with a product of only
some 52,000 Eggs all [told?]: the expense
incurred in capturing these fish [amount?]
to [$290.00?] making the cost of each
Salmon a little over $17.00 and whilst
the individual cost of each fish is
to [surmount?], the quantity of Eggs
taken from them is nearly 50%
less than should be realized from
the reported number of females.

If the present seasons
operation on the St John River were the
first, or were of an Experimental nature
it might not be held to be of such
