Dear Mr. Goode

Having been from home for some time and upon my return I notice the great calamity which has befallen your country & particularly the Institution with which you are associated by the death of Prof. Baird. Not only from the Public point of view but from strong personal feelings, do I deeply regret the loss of so [?] a necessary one too whose freedom and friendship toward me was kindly conspicuous in transmitting to me the various reports and Bulletins of your Institution, as well as giving me his private views upon so many matters relating to the [?] of Artificial Fish Culture.
