Messrs Barker [Torrey?] & Co.

Dr Sir

In reply to your favor of the 9the inst
I would say that when the bill for the foundation in lot
#3629 [?]) was [received?], the price was placed at cost
owning to the misunderstanding which then [appeared?] to
by which I considered was meeting the matter promptly
& fairly on our post, and to be all that we shuld do.

Mr. Lennox was here in the early spring and wanted
the foundation built in the most thorough way, and it
was built of block stone in large blocks in the best manner
and this was in my opinion necessary owing to the large
amount of clay under this and the aspiring lots which
has heretofore given some trouble. When here, Mr. Lennox
asked & obtained an estimate higher than the amount
charged.

I claim that Mr Lennox did order the foundation and
that he is charged less than the estimate given him.

Respectfuly
