Dec. 12th [188]2.

C.B. Caufield Esq

Dear Sir

In ansewr to your favor as
of the 11th inst. I would say that the distance
from the present back line of the inner
curbing, to the headstones is 11 to 12 inches & that
the width of the bases of the headstones is 17 inches
making from lot line to the front of the bases
of headstones 2'-4" or 5". Ordinarily, the proprietors
of lots here own only the land enclosed in
the inner enclosure: with a right of passage
from the Avenue, only, but in this case the
lot was originally laid out differently,
and the shape was altered when the
present curbing was put up. Mr Fiske's
deed calls for five hundred feet, but
there is at present enclosed about 418 ft.
leaving 82 ft not included in the inner
enclosure which belongs to him.

If he prefers to place the monument
at the head of the graves, as the headstones
now stand, I think it might be arranged
as that he could occupy land back of
his present line & then make up the 82 ft
which belong to him, tho' it does not seem
as if he could go back as much as 3'-4"
which would be needed to make up the
width of the foundation in addition to the land
now between the line & the front of the headstone
bases, without interfering with the next lots,
but he might go back enough to answer the
purpose. If the owner of the next lot should
ever put up a stone line, which by his deed
he has the right to do, the monument would,
if seems to me, come very near to it. & look too
crowded, perhaps.

Yrs truly
J.W. Lovering
