At Midnights witching hour I love to wake,
And court Reflections sadly pleasing pow'r;
Or through fair Fancy's wilds my way I take,
Or raise Imaginations airy Tow'r.-

While Memory bids past Pleasures charm again,
Or colours o'er some old Romantic tale;
I love to hear the beating Wintry rain,
And catch deep bo'ding voices in the gale.

Silence which now o'er all triumphant reigns,
Throws o'er the whole a sacred solemn awe;
And the wild Visions varying Fancy feigns,
Turn true, as those which Sense and Nature draw.
