obtain a medical education without expatriating themselves
and as this was now accomplished, the example of
Queen's having been followed by Toronto and Montreal,
it was thought wise to close the college and let the
students betake themselves elsewhere.

The School of Mining and Agriculture was
opened during the autumn, the zealous efforts of the
Principal, Dr Smith and others having been sufficienlty
successful to warrant and others having been sufficiently
successful to warrant a beginning. Subscriptions had
been received to the amount of $35000, and the City of
Kingston voted the old Collegiate Institute property,
valued at $20,000, for the use of the School. The
Governors determined to apply for grants to the neighbouring
County Councils. The Dominion Government
was also applied to for assistance in the Department
of Navigation. The Governors of the School
elected Dr Goodwin as their Professor of Chemistry, and
Mr W Nicol, who had already acted as lecturer under
Dr Goodwin, was elected Professor of Mineralogy.

Mr Willet Miller was appointed Lecturer in
Geology and Petrography. It was also agreed that
students desiring to take classes in Chemistry, Mineralogy
and Geology should attend them at the School of
Mining. The University was thus relieved of the
task of teaching the two departments of
Chemistry and Mineralogy, while Professor
