Kingston January 21st 1889.

The first meeting of the Council elect of the Corporation of the City
of Kingston was held this day Present
James Duncan Thompson Esquire Mayor Elect.
Aldermen
Cataraqui Ward
John Gaskin, Frederick Rees, William M. Drennan
Frontenac Ward
William Carson, John McCammon, George Cruggan
Ontario Ward
George Steven Fenwick, William Wilson, Joseph Francis Swift
Rideau Ward
Donald McIntyre, Christopher Robinson, William Adams
Saint Lawrence Ward
James Minnes, William Robinson, Neil C. Polson
Sydenham Ward
Charles F. Gildersleeve, William Harty, John Muckleston
Victoria Ward
Joseph Hiscock, Robert W. Shannon, John McLeod

John Duff Esquire Police Magistrate administered the
declarations of qualifiaction and office to the Mayor elect
Whereupon the Mayor elect took the Chair and
administered the declarations of qualifications and
of office to the Aldermen elect _

The Roll being called all the Members were present
the Mayor addressed the Council

An Application from Adam McArthur for
the office of Auditors was read

The Mayor nominated Joseph E. Clark as his
auditor.

On Motion of Ald: Harty seconded by Ald: Gildersleeve
Ordered, that Adam McArthur be auditor on behalf
of the Council for 1889 and that the nomination of the
Mayors Auditor Mr Joseph E Clark be confirmed

Ald: Harty gives notice he will introduce a By Law
to appoint two auditors for the year 1889 for the Municipality
of the City of Kingston

A Communication from E. H. Smythe Esquire [?]
Secy Kingston Collegiate Institute was read stating the
two retiring Trustees of the Institute are Professor N.F. Dupuis
and himself _

Ald: Gildersleeve moves seconded by Ald: Harty
that Professor Dupuis and Herbert M. Mowat be
Trustees for the Collegiate Institute in place of those retiring

In Amendment
Ald: Shannon moves seconded by Ald: Gaskin
That Professor N.F. Dupuis and Dr E.H. Smythe
be re-appointed members of the Collegiate Institute
Board for the year 1889 _ which being put was lost [Underlined]
