5: Light south wind first part of 24 hours with thick damp fog. Last part of 24 hours light North wind, thick fog. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper went to Newport after supplies. 1st asst went fishing. Barometer 29.88 today. 2nd asst putting wood in celler. Had no visitors.

6: Strong to fresh breeze N.West these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours thick damp fog. Last part of 24 hours clear fine weather. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst went to Newport on his way to Portland to see a Doctor, he being sick. Left station at 9 A.M. Keeper went to Newport. 2nd asst's little son has the scalltime???

7: Fresh breeze N.West these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours high dry fog. Last part of 24 hours clear fine weather. Sea quite rough. Keeper sawing and putting wood into celler. 2nd asst sowing six visitors in the Tower. Steamer Farallon arrived from San Francisco and crossed into Yaquina at 10 A.M. Barometer 29.92.

10: Light North wind these 24 hours with thick fog and smoke most of 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 2nd asst putting wood into his celler and showing 4 visitors in Tower. Keeper digging potatoes. Barometer 30.00 to 29.96 today.

11: Light variable winds with light rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours cloudy but fair weather. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper went to Newport after supplies. 2nd asst showing 8 visitors in the Tower & putting wood in his celler. Barometer 29.84 today. 1st asst returned to the station at 8 P.M.

13: Light South wind these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours light rain showers. Last part of 24 hours fair and warmer weather. Sea smooth. General duties for day. 1st asst went fishing. 2nd asst showing 19 visitors in Tower. Barometer 29.90 today. Keeper returned to the station at 11 A.M.

14: Light South wind with fair weather these 24 hours. Sea smooth. 2nd asst showing 6 visitors in the Tower at 11.45 A.M. Keepers scrapeing blisters off of and painting the Keeper's dwelling. Also scraping and painting rusty spots under stair landings in Tower as ordered by Inspector. Barometer 29.85 today.

I think he is saying Scarletine. I found online that scarlatina is another name for scarlet fever. I think on Sept. 6th he misspelled it, and re-wrote the r in scar. It looks like he wrote t then wrote over it. It's not exactly the same, but I don't know what else it could be.
