Walked up toward Allen Gates hall again and saw them both. Shook hands, and talked about Works. Bill said it must be a big day for me. I said 6 out of 7 disks had shipped. Bugs with DOS 2.1 He asked "yours?" "No, I'm done"!!!

He said to Paul that he thinks Works had a very nice look, and that we have had fortune to be a good team working together.

Andy Evans & Ann Lewellon: Bill also made some funny remarks ~ WSJ article.

Anyway, he moved away (while I was talking with Paul, etc) and I talked with Paul about his high-end software. His health is fully recovered he said. Ten programmers. We talked about passed Lakesiders. Neither of us has ever been to John Blacks store. Tim Thompson said thank you to Paul in a very eloquent way. Paul said something gracious. I can't remember how this little encounter ended, but it was not awkward. (During this period and throughout the evening Paul Bill & I never reminisced.) I believe Paul moved away from Tim & I and then Peter Helsell came over to say hi to Tim, and then Malcom Scott Graham too, all class '72 people. After a while I excused myself and mingled. I saw Mary Gates but didn't catch her eye so I did not say Hello.

Then I saw Chris Wright. He's become very well fed and a lawyer. We talked about computers. I found it VERY DIFFICULT to articulate what's significant in keeping a software project from becoming chaos. Certainly there's no top-down command, as Chris says there is in his company, a law firm. BUT THIS DIFFICULTY SHOWS WHI I AM NOT A MANAGER. Not long after this, Bob Raphael came up from behind. Good to see him.

Then the ceremony started. Dan Ayrault had Bill Dougall, Fred Wright, and some gorgeous white-blond guy who is a student say what the building means to them. Paul spoke, and then Bill (saying Lakeside is only school ever granting him or Paul a diploma.) and then Mr Evans performed the act of dedication. It was raining very slightly and sky was very gray. Touching moment.
