Dan A. made concluding remarks, and there was a moment of silence during which the bell tower sounded only. It was a very solemn time, yet joyous.

I didn't really remember well the details of my relationship with Kent, but Bill certainly seemed to. I felt that their gift was something it would have been hard for me to be a part of, but that seems reasonable given the degree that I and my life are so different from Paul & Bill & their lives.

I recalled some jealousy of their friendship. They read books during the summer, and played chess at school. They lived close together. Bill invited Paul to his parents house for dinner years ago, but never me. I was never really very close to Bill at Lakeside, except that we had a fairly intense time of friendship among the four of us. But I didn't feel the same intensity for Bill as apparently Paul & Kent did. It was not awkward, but I just didn't become as much a part of it as they did.

Of course Paul & I left Lakeside in '71 and I was in Oregon during Kent's death. I didn't go to memorial due to Finals week, as I recall. I felt a sense of loss, but it was not strongly emotional. During that summer I worked in Portland, but Paul & Bill did the school scheduling project.

BUT BEFORE DIGRESSING INTO ANALYSIS, let me finish the rest of the evenings events.

Chris Write, Bob Raphael & I took a tour of the new building, with Chris W. asking me questions about networking, and using PCS on his firms Wang Mini. I told him to see a dealer--that's their function.

While we were still upstairs, Dan Clancy came by, and I said "Dan?" since he didn't recognize me, and we had quite a nice talk, then and throughout the evening. As we walked through the courtyard, I saw Fay Allen and considered stopping, but didn't because they looked busy and I didn't really know what I would say, not for lack of ideas, but because I felt my presense was a delicate situation, since I haven't been part of their lives for so long. KROM too.
