means pretty or good in any
way. The only redeeming feature
is that there is plenty of water.
The white ants build enormous
nests in this part of the country,
some we saw today were fully
9ft high, in the shape of a sugar loaf

Saturday 21st.

Left camp at 8 and arrived at
camp tonight at about ½ past
4, after rather an exciting day.
We went through a magnificent
gauge [gorge] almost directly we
started this morning. The rocks
on either side of us were so
immense, & a creak of lovely
dark looking water by the side
of where we were riding. We saw
numbers of Black's tracks (foot-
prints on the sand) evidently
quite freshly made. All the
way along, there were fires,
where the blacks were. Our way
didn't take us close to any of
them fortunately. Coming
through the second gauge
we saw some fresh tracks
of two blacks, gins & picininnies
& Mr. Favenc says a gin ran
away from just beside him.
He didn't see her, but he knows
