August [1883]

Sunday 12th

Very hot all day. This morning
the gentlemen read the Southern
papers that came by yesterday's
mail from Pt. Darwin. In the Cool
of the afternoon we all took a walk
through the city (!) of Southport
It consists of 6 or 8 chinese stores
& one English, at which one can
get nothing one wants. The houses
are all built of corrugated iron,
which the inhabitants prefer to
any other material as it soon gets
cool after the heat of the day is over.

Monday 13th

Mr. Foelsche arrived this afternoon
& is staying all night. It was slightly
cooler today. We did some
of our packing & sent it down to
the Steam launch, which is only
5 minutes walk from here.

Tuesday 14th

We left the Johnsons' at 8 o'clock after
an earlier breakfast than usual. The
little steam-launch was waiting for
us, so we left immediately, & arrived
at Port Darwin at 11. after a rather
