flying. With this squadron as air bomber of a Stirling aircraft he took part in four operational flights comprising attacks on Mannheim and Berlin and minelaying sorties off the Frisian Islands and in the Bay of Biscay.

On the 22nd November 1943, Flight Sergeant Margetts was a member of the crew of Stirling bomber which took off on air operations to attack the target of Berlin. The aircraft failed to return to its base and the members of the crew including Flight Sergeant Margetts were classified as missing. After due lapse of time his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 22nd November 1943. At a subsequent date information was received that he had been buried in the British Cemetery, Reinburg, Germany.

The crew of the aircraft contained two other New Zealanders, Sergeant E.R. Whittington of Pakowhai and Sergeant A.G. Bernard of Hawera.
