NZ413103 Flying Officer Ivan MARINOVICH.

Ivan Marinovich was born at Oratia, Auckland on the 16th March, 1917. He received his secondary education at the Sacred Heart College Auckland and passed the Matriculation examination. He played football and tennis at school. From the time of leaving school in 1934 until applying for enlistment in aircrew, on the 16th September, 1940, he was working with his father and brothers in general farming at Oratia.

Flying Officer Marinovich was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing Levin on the 25th May 1941 and proceeded to No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School, Whenuapai on the 6th July to commence his flying training. Here this was terminated during the same month and he was reported to Levin on the 2nd October for training as an air observer. After completing his initial training there, he embarked on the 17th November, 1941 for Canada to train under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Flying Officer Marinovich arrived in Canada early in December and was posted to No. 6 Air Observer School, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, on the 5th of the same month, thence on the 15th March, 1942 to No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School, Dafoe, Saskatchewan. Here on the 25th April he was awarded the Air Observer badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant, before proceeding on the 26th of the same month to No. 1 Air Navigation School, Rivers, Manitoba.

At the conclusion of the course there, he was remustered to Air Navigator and commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer, on the 25th May, 1942, being promoted to Flying Officer on the 25th November, 1942. Meanwhile on the 5th June he had been posted to No. 31 General Reconniassance School, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and trained on Hudson Aircraft. On the 12th September he proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.
