Pilot Officer Markland was the Captain of a Lancaster Aircraft engaged during the night of the 18/19th February, 1943 in a bombing raid on Wilhelmshaven. The aircraft failed to return to its base, the result it is presumed of enemy action, and all the crew including Pilot Officer Markland were classified as missing. Later, information was received from a German official source through the International Red Cross Committee that Pilot Officer Markland had lost his life and was buried in the District Cemetery at Wilhelmshaven. In consequence he was reclassified to missing believed killed in action. In due cousre his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 18th February, 1943.

After the cessation of hostilities P/O Markland's body was re-interred to the British Military Cemetery, Oldenburg (Sage), Germany.
