Murray Marks was born in Broughton, Manchester, England on September 17th, 1906. and received his secondary education at the Chirstchurch Technical College. At school his sports were soccer and hockey. He was a member of the Territorial Forces from 1923 to 1928, attaining the rank of Sergeant. At the time of applying for an appointment as a Commissioned Officer in the Air Training Corps on November 24th 1941 his civilian occupation was that of Branch Manager, Nestle and Anglo-Swiss Milk Company, Wellington. He was granted a commission as Pilot Officer in the Wellington Squadron, Air Training Corps on December 31st, 1941. Pilot Officer Marks transferred from the Air Training Corps to the Royal New Zealand Air Force on September 1st, 1942, being enlisted at Levin on administrative duties. He attended the Officers' School of Instruction from November 26th, to December 8th, embarking on January 19th 1943 for Suva, where he was stationed at Headquarters on Cypher duties. After five months' service in Fiji he was returned from overseas in June 1943 suffering from Functional Dyspepsia. He was posted to No. 60 Squadron, Whenuapai, on returning to New Zealand. On August 27th he was transferred to No. 2 Port Depot Sick and Wounded, Rongotai. He relinquished his commission on October 24th 1943 and was discharged from the Royal New Zealand Air Force. On November 24th he entered St. George's Hospital, Christchurch where he died on December 31st 1943.
