He was posted on the 1st January 1944 to No. 1651 Conversion Unit, Wratling Common, Cambridgeshire, to convert to Stirling bombers and following this he proceeded on the 4th February 1944 to No. 3 Lancaster Finishing School, Feltwell, Norfolk, to graduate on Lancaster heavy bombers prior to posting on the 14th February 1944 to No. 626 Squadron, Wickenby, Lincolnshire, to commence operational flying. With this squadron as pilot of a Lancaster bomber he took part in thirteen operational flights including attacks on Schweinfurt (2), Frankfurt, Augsburg, and Stuttgart, in Germany, and Hasselt in Belgium.

During April 1944 Pilot Officer Marriott was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal, the citation reading as follows:-

(indented) "Flight Sergeant Marriott was captain of an aircraft detailed to attack Frankfurt one night in March 1944. When nearing the target area his aircraft was attacked by a fighter. Although Flight Sergeant Marriott manouvered his aircraft with much skill, and his gunner got in several bursts of fire, the bomber sustained severe damage before the attacker could be evaded. Nevertheless, Flight Sergeant Marriott determined to complete the task for which he had been detailed and went on to execute his attack and he afterwards flew the badly damaged aircraft safely back to base. He had displayed skill, courage and resolution beyond praise."

From the operation against the target of Hasselt undertaken in a Lancaster bomber on the night of the 11/12th May 1944 the aircraft failed to return to its base and all the of its crew including Pilot Officer Marriott were classified as missing. Due time having elapsed, Pilot Offier Marriott's death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 12th May 1944 as the results of air operations.
